MOVING !!!

It's been fun, but my forever fickle interests have brought me to a new blog. Sequin Pocket Knife will now only be archives and I am putting all my energy into Comet Salvage, which is both the name of my new blog and that of my Etsy store.

Recent Obsession

Country living and spring weather have sparked my lust for brightly colored salvaged junk. I've been scouring everywhere for ideas for my new porch garden, and I have a lot of porch to fill so I need a lot of ideas.

Much inspiration has been draw from my days as an abandoned warehouse fiend in Troy, NY. The colors of rusted metal, the decay of wood, the way nature always takes over. Abandoned warehouses, forsaken junkyards and local trash night are the things I miss most about urban living.

I've also gotten a lot of inspiration from amazing artists and junk collectors on Etsy. I now know what I will be looking for at this summer's blur of flea markets and estate auctions.

Coachella

I'm not in Indio right now. But all my friends are. Ok, not ALL my friends. But a whole bunch of them. I'm jealous I guess.
Two of my employers and my sister played there this weekend. I feel that I should be there supporting, helping, cheering. If I wasn't two days from pushing a large baby out, I would be there too.
I had gotten over my sadness of missing Coachella for the third year in a row, until I got this picture in my email inbox today.
Zoe and Amanda in front of a massive Coachella crowd.

**Sigh**
Next year.... ?

INTERNET!!!!!

After almost a month I finally have internets in my new house!!!!!!!!!!
It took forever. It's one of those broadband wireless USB devices since we are so far out in the woods that cable and DSL do not dare venture near us.
But I can check email, watch videos, download podcasts, and most importantly POST TO BLOGGER and ETSY.

Rainy Day Salvage

Staying at my sister's house for about a week. It's in the damp, rainy Redwood Forests north of San Francisco. The town (or more of a collection of houses really), Camp Meeker, was an old summer camp built in the 1920s for wealthy Hollywood types. The houses are piled on top of each other, but because it's all steep hills with tall tall redwoods, you can't actually see the neighbors' homes unless you look down. All the houses were built in the 20s as summer homes (ie. no insulation). Compared to the Upstate New York all-weather fortresses that I am used to, these places feel like a strong wind would knock them right over. I fear what an earthquake would do to this place.

The house my sister and her husband live in was last inhabited in the 1970s, it's been sitting vacant ever since. The previous owners did however leave behind ALL their furniture and housewares, maybe to keep the walls company. It's an absolute treasure trove for people like me, the stuff is all circa mid-40s to early-70s. But alas, when my sister moved in two years ago she just piled everything up in the leaky, moldy garage. **Zoe is totally awesome, and it's not her fault she is so super busy all the time. She's on tour in Australia right now for example** So a lot of the stuff was ruined. But glass and ceramic aren't affected by mold, thank goodness, and I have plenty of new fun stuff to sell on Etsy, as well as some more valuable items for eBay. Not sure yet what to do with the larger furniture and appliances (beautiful 1940s Wedgewood stove and refrigerator), I'm thinking of enlisting the help of a local antique dealer.

All very exciting, now if only the rain would let up, I could get some pictures of the neighborhood.

Sacramento

Art installation at the Sacramento airport. By Brian Goggin.

Capitol building (hoping to see Arnold roaming around, no such luck).

The park surrounding the capitol was the best part. Recent rains have made everything green and blooming. Such a nice change from the cold NY weather.

And Away We Go

Bright and early tomorrow morning Nate and I get on an airplane in cold, windy Buffalo and by dinner time we will be in sunny Sacramento California. Goodness Golly I can't wait.

Thomas Crown Affair

Watched the remake last night staring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. The 1968 original was far superior. Rene Russo was so painfully annoying, I wanted so badly for the film to end with her crying and miserable on the airplane.
Faye Dunaway did it much better, and was WAY more convincing as a sexy seductress. Also, Steve McQueen, in my opinion, is super dreamier than Pierce.

Spring Stripe Inspiration

Stripes have always held a special place in my heart. They tend to be the first pattern I'm drawn to when scanning racks of clothes and rows of furniture. They say babies have poor sight but respond well to high contrast, well I don't think I ever got over the attraction to such visual affects.
Lucky for me, Spring 09 seems to be stripe friendly. Some of my favorites:
