Staying at my sister's house for about a week. It's in the damp, rainy Redwood Forests north of San Francisco. The town (or more of a collection of houses really), Camp Meeker, was an old summer camp built in the 1920s for wealthy Hollywood types. The houses are piled on top of each other, but because it's all steep hills with tall tall redwoods, you can't actually see the neighbors' homes unless you look down. All the houses were built in the 20s as summer homes (ie. no insulation). Compared to the Upstate New York all-weather fortresses that I am used to, these places feel like a strong wind would knock them right over. I fear what an earthquake would do to this place.
The house my sister and her husband live in was last inhabited in the 1970s, it's been sitting vacant ever since. The previous owners did however leave behind ALL their furniture and housewares, maybe to keep the walls company. It's an absolute treasure trove for people like me, the stuff is all circa mid-40s to early-70s. But alas, when my sister moved in two years ago she just piled everything up in the leaky, moldy garage. **
Zoe is totally awesome, and it's not her fault she is so super busy all the time. She's on tour in Australia right now for example** So a lot of the stuff was ruined. But glass and ceramic aren't affected by mold, thank goodness, and I have plenty of new fun stuff to
sell on Etsy, as well as some more valuable items for
eBay. Not sure yet what to do with the larger furniture and appliances (beautiful 1940s Wedgewood stove and refrigerator), I'm thinking of enlisting the help of a local antique dealer.
All very exciting, now if only the rain would let up, I could get some pictures of the neighborhood.
